Maine’s lakes belong to all of us.

Caring for Maine’s beautiful lakes and ponds is our collective responsibility. The LPC is currently advocating for LD 2141, a bill that would direct $2 million annually towards protecting clean lakes. Learn how you can help this bill succeed here.

The Challenge

Maine’s lakes are at risk—from invasive species, development, polluted runoff, and policy inaction. But our state’s response remains fragmented and underpowered. Our clean and beautiful lakes are economic engines, attracting billions in revenue through tourism, property values, and jobs. Clean lakes are threatened by human activity. Maintaining their long-term health requires foresight, investment, and a united effort. Without this, we risk reacting too late and paying far more down the line.

“We are loving our lakes to death.”

Eric Lind, public servant, veteran – Maine lakes advocate

Our Vision

We envision a future where all of Maine’s lakes are clean, healthy, and resilient. They anchor our environment, economy, and way of life. They are protected by state and local stewards, sustained funding, and strong policies that safeguard their natural beauty and draw people to live, work, and play in Maine. From iconic summer camps to thriving tourism, from wildlife habitat and quality sport-fishing to clean drinking water, our lakes are valuable assets—and they need our protection.

Our Response

We’re building a new statewide coalition to unite advocates and strengthen coordination among those who care about and rely on our lakes, and to advance innovative, effective, science-based policy change. Together, we can meet the challenge and protect our lakes, ponds, and freshwaters for future generations.
